Intermediate Care Facility Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (ICF/IDD) Group Living

ICF/IDD is a program supported by tax dollars, and there is no state waiting list. However, the Ranch does maintain a list of potential Ranchers who have showed interest. Potential residents must simply be out of high school, need support with daily living tasks, have a determination of an intellectual disability before the age of 18 or a developmental disability before the age of 22. Down Home Ranch has four 6 bed ICF group home on site at the Ranch.

  • Six-person capacity plus live-in staff
  • Large individual, private bedrooms, decorated to personal taste
  • Private or semiprivate bathroom
  • Single-sex and co-ed houses
  • Fees paid by federal and state tax dollars
  • Potential Ranchers must be eligible for Medicaid and have a determination of an intellectual disability to qualify
  • Cost covered through Medicaid

HOME AND COMMUNITY BASED SERVICES (HCS) GROUP Living

HCS is a waiver program for which there exists a 10-15 year waiting list. Ranchers live in the city limits of Elgin and are transported to the ranch daily for programs. Learn more about the HCS wavier.

Down Home Ranch has three 3 bed HCS group homes in Elgin, TX.

  • Three-person capacity plus live-in staff
  • Large individual, private bedrooms, decorated to personal taste
  • Private or semiprivate bathroom
  • One home for women, two for men
  • Fees paid by federal and state tax dollars
  • Potential Ranchers must be eligible for Medicaid and have a determination of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) to qualify
  • Cost covered through Medicaid

Private Pay (PP) Group Living

PP is a program that provides many of the same supports as the other group living, but is for Ranchers who pay out of pocket.

Supported Independent Living (SIL)

SIL is a program that is open to Ranchers who private pay. Ranchers live independently on the Ranch with support only when needed.

Down Home Ranch has 2 two bed cottages and 5 micro homes on site at the Ranch.

In addition to meeting the general criteria for residency, candidates for SIL must demonstrate a high degree of personal responsibility:

Able to manage without direct assistance:

  • One and two person homes, no live-in staff
  • Large individual, private bedrooms, decorated to personal taste
  • Private or semi-private bathroom
  • Single sex, married couple or life partner
  • Private Pay fees paid per month, per person

Due to the low level of supervision, any Rancher seeking a SIL placement must demonstrate a high level of autonomy and self-motivation. The SIL Ranchers must manage with limited assistance:

  • Grooming and personal hygiene
  • Prepare breakfast and clean up afterwards
  • Report to work on time
  • Take care of personal needs such as kitchen chores, light housework and laundry with minimal help
  • Get along with housemate (for two-person households)
  • Plan menus and shopping
  • Maintain home and yard
  • Prepare simple meals

Independent Living Experience (ILE)

The Independent Living Experience at Down Home Ranch includes a three to six-month term in one of the residential homes.

  • Opportunity to explore independent living
  • No long-term commitment
  • Fully furnished, move-in ready residences
  • An interim living arrangement for individuals planning their futures
  • Has the potential to lead to long-term SIL
  • In addition to meeting the general criteria for residency, candidates for ILE must demonstrate a high degree of personal responsibility

  • Two person home
  • 2-bedroom, 2-bath suites
  • Large private individual bedrooms and bathrooms, decorated to personal taste
  • Common living, kitchen and dining areas
  • Single sex, married couple or life partners
  • Private Pay fees paid per month, per person
